about
Performances featuring Ritwik Banerji (and Rob Frye on Moonrise) with artificial improvising agents designed with Max/MSP

"Maxine" is an agent developed with Max/MSP designed to do her own thing as an improviser. I seek to make her musical experience a free engagement with other improvisers. While I have dedicated a great deal of time to developing Maxine's instincts as an improviser, her performances here are without the aid of direct manipulation. I guess you could say she's "improvising."

"Maxine" is also a character from Jhumpa Lahiri's novel "The Namesake," a work of fiction which has disturbingly rich parallels to my life as a Bengali-American man. Like Lahiri's Maxine, this Maxine has had experiences growing up which I can identify with, but many which were completely different.

Even though she is a Bengali invention, I don't think she likes to be called "artificial." She may prefer "alternative" as Goodiepal suggests.
